Is your drinking water safe?

“Drinking water contaminated with PFAS has plagued communities across this country for too long,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. Protect your water with the PIONEER Whole-House Filtration and Contaminate Removal System.

The Problem

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) recently announced the first-ever nationwide standards for PFAS in drinking water. PFAS chemicals, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a class of thousands of chemicals used to make items nonstick, stain-resistant, and water-resistant and even to snuff out fuel fires. PFAS chemicals have been used to manufacture household items, from nonstick cookware to carpeting and waterproof clothing. However, they linger in the environment, build up in people’s bodies, and have been linked to serious health effects, such as developmental problems, immune issues, and some cancers. PFAS are often referred to as forever chemicals. They do not break down naturally in the environment or the human body.

Over 300,000 Minnesota residents in over 20 communities are currently provided water to their homes that do not meet the EPA’s standard. Regulators have given public water providers until 2029 to meet these standards. Public water providers will need to build billion-dollar facilities that will cost millions annually to operate and clean water to meet new standards and be safe for Minnesota Residents.

Here is a local news report on Minnesota’s contaminated water.

The Impact

Current scientific research suggests that exposure to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health outcomes. However, research is still ongoing to determine how different levels of exposure to different PFAS can lead to a variety of health effects.

Known Health Effects:

  • Reproductive effects such as decreased fertility or increased high blood pressure in pregnant women.
  • Developmental effects or delays in children include low birth weight, accelerated puberty, bone variations, or behavioral changes.
  • Increased risk of some cancers, including prostate, kidney, and testicular cancers.
  • Reduced ability of the body’s immune system to fight infections, including reduced vaccine response.
  • Interference with the body’s natural hormones.
  • Increased cholesterol levels and/or risk of obesity.
